Chapter 18

“Was that too much?” Rylea whispered to Darcie after Jeannette and the other American cow passed. “I mean, having my arm around you?”

Darcie looked at her, and Rylea was thinking perhaps she needed to repeat the question, when suddenly, Darcie grabbed her head with both of her hands and planted a quick, closed-mouth kiss on her lips.

“Are you kidding me?” Darcie asked. “That was bloody brilliant! Keep it up!”

Rylea had to take a deep breath, her lips still feeling Darcie’s on them.

“Erm, yeah,” she said. “No problem!” Especially if her reward was going to be more kisses. “She did seem a little tripped up when she saw us.”

“You noticed that too?” Darcie whispered.

Rylea nodded. It had actually been rather gratifying to notice that Jeannette, upon seeing her with Darcie, had seemed taken aback.

“I did,” she answered Darcie. “Now we just have to continue the ruse.”

“Exactly,” Darcie said. “And remember, be sure not to look a day over twenty-five.”

“I’m not a day over twenty-five,” Rylea reminded her. “Or twenty-five, full stop.”

“I know,” Darcie assured her. “I’m just reminding you!”

Rylea smirked.

“This silly schoolgirl enthusiasm you have for revenge must be why I decided to date you,” she said. She looked behind them and groaned. “Ugh, they’re doing a receiving line?” she asked, noticing guests queueing up. “Really? Why? Those are so bloody stupid!”

Her theory about receiving lines was that couples used them to take note of who showed up for the wedding, which she imagined was important information when it came to determining who didn’t bring a gift.

They joined the back of the queue, and Rylea was secretly thrilled when Darcie not only held her hand but would also rest her head on her shoulder from time to time, as if impatient with how slowly the line was advancing.

“We’ve got her attention,” Rylea told Darcie softly. She was referring to how Jeannette would frequently look to her right, over her wife’s head, to peek over at them.

“Oh, I know,” Darcie replied, just as softly. “She was always terrible at subtlety, especially if she was bothered by something. She probably believes no one can see her doing that.”

After taking another few steps closer, Rylea asked, “Right, so how do you want to play this when it’s our turn?”

“Softly nibble on my earlobe while fondling my left breast,” Darcie replied.

Rylea laughed, with Darcie joining in. This had the effect of making Jeannette, yet again, steal a glance over at them while greeting one of her guests.

“Just be yourself, Rylea,” Darcie said. “You’re already fabulous; just remember that you’re fabulous and my girlfriend.”

“I should bloody hope so if I get to fondle your tits,” she snarkily retorted.

More laughter. Rylea couldn’t help but realise that she was having more fun with Darcie than she’d had with many of her past real girlfriends. She just felt so at ease with Darcie, and she had a very strong suspicion that Darcie was feeling the same way.

It was too bad this whole charade wasn’t going to lead to
